In what sense?

Maybe the same capacity for the air group : helicopters and conventionnal plane : Su 27K on Kuznetsov and Mig 29K on the Vikradymantia

Kuznetsov has a larger displacement that Vikramaditya. Kuznetsov carries 12 SU-27 or 16 freestylers and Vikramaditya can carry 16 MiG-29's.

But the irony is Kuznetsov can accomodate SU-33 comfprtably and Vikramaditya cannot do it "comfortably."

Indian team in Russia to oversee Gorshkov's refit

MOSCOW, FEB 21 (PTI)

A team of Indian specialists has arrived at Russia's Sevmash defence shipyard to monitor the refurbishment of the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov before it is handed over to the Indian Navy next year.

The 20 specialists will control the works on the vessel under the framework of the contract for maintenance and re-equipment of the carrier, which will be renamed the Vikramaditya after being inducted into the Indian Navy.

The Indians will live in Severodvinsk in the northern Arkhangelsk region with their families in apartment buildings specially prepared for them, the shipyard's press service officer Anastasiya Nikitinskaya was quoted as saying by Itar- Tass.

Under an agreement signed by Russia and India in January 2004, the Gorshkov's hull was transferred to India free-of-charge for upgrading at Sevmash. The carrier is also being equipped to new operate MiG-29 jets.

The contract for refitting the carrier is estimated to be worth 1.5 billion dollars.

The Sevmash shipyard will complete all the works in 2008. Russia will also train a 1,500-strong Indian crew and create infrastructure for the carrier's deployment in the Indian Ocean.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy’s only aircraft carrier, Viraat, may be an easy target for enemy aircraft and other weapon platforms.
The navy discovered the vulnerability during a month-long exercise that concluded a few days ago on the western sea front.
Tropex (Theatre-level Readiness Operational Exercises) is the navy’s most extensive annual drill in which all its major platforms collaborate. The air force, coast guard, and army components also take part in the exercise.
The authorities were reticent about Viraat’s susceptibility to attack. But a source said “the enemy’s” unmanned aerial vehicles and long-range patrol aircraft were able to intrude into the carrier group’s airspace during the war-simulation exercise, determine the location of carrier, and close in on it.
The gaping breach in the security of the carrier battle group — a combination of warships with the carrier at its heart — raises questions about the utility of acquiring new aircraft carriers. India has procured the Gorshkov (INS Vikramaditya) from Russia, and another carrier is under construction in the Cochin shipyard. A proposal to build a second carrier in Kochi is also being considered.
A carrier, its support ships, and other electronic warfare systems on board are supposed to be on guard against enemy intrusion at all times. It is a cat-and-mouse game between the carrier group and the enemy’s potent aircraft such as the P3C Orion. If an intrusion is reported by the carrier’s consorts, then a combat air patrol is scrambled. The fighters from the carrier then chase the intruders away. No such alert was sounded during Tropex.
The thrust of this year’s exercise was to validate the concept of ‘maritime manoeuvre from the sea’. The exercise is designed to ensure that in a short, swift, and intense conflict, the navy is able to directly address and favourably influence the progress and outcome of the air-land battle.
The lessons learnt during the exercise will “now be fed back into the navy’s analysis organisations and used to refine operational doctrines”, a navy statement said. The statement did not mention the weak spot in Viraat’s defence.
“A detailed analysis of the exercise is now underway,” the statement said.

"A study group has recommended that the extension of service life of the warship is possible up to 2012," Defence Minister A K Antony told Rajya Sabha in a written reply today.

He said the group had suggested that this was possible subject to certain repairs being undertaken in addition to routine periodic maintenance.

Presently, INS Viraat, inducted into the Navy in 1983, is its lone aircraft carrier. With a displacement of 28,000 tonnes, Viraat carries eight Sea Harriers and four Sea King anti-submarine warfare helicopters.

The carrier since its induction has gone in for as many as six major and minor midlife refits to keep it afloat.

India is expecting to induct its second carrier of 44,000 tonnes displacement Admiral Gorshkov by August next year.

Gorshkov, which has been re-christened INS Vikramaditya, is currently going in for an extensive refit in a Russian shipyard.

Cet image doit correspondre pas mal à la réalité sachant que les Indiens le construisent avec l'aide Italienne et quand on voit la silhouette, ca ressemble quand meme un peu au Cavour........

Russia will not be able to deliver the refitted aircraft carrier Gorshokov next year as scheduled. The delivery has now been pushed to 2010 and it's going to cost $113 million extra.

This cost is over and above the $ 1 billion that India is paying for its refit and upgrade. The delay is apparently because Russian builders underestimated the length of cabling required -- it's not 700 km but 2,400 km, they have told the Indian Navy.

Naval Headquarters is sending a senior officer to Moscow to assess the situation. The Navy's only other carrier the Viraat was due to be retired from service in 2012.

Russia and India came to an agreement over the sale of the ship, the then-Admiral Gorshkov, which they had been haggling over for many years, in 2004, following which the ship is being extensively refitted. It is projected to replace INS Viraat. US$800 million is budgeted for refit and upgrade by the Indian government.

Upgrade plans involve stripping all the weaponry from the ship's foredeck, converting her from a hybrid carrier/cruiser to a pure carrier, allowing her to operate the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Sea Harrier aircraft. The deal also includes the purchase of 30 MIG 29K Fulcrum D (Product 9.41) aircraft, six Kamov Ka-31 Helix attack helicopters and reconnaissance anti-submarine helicopters, torpedo tubes, missile systems, and artillery units, costing an additional US$700 million.

The ship will be operated in a STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Assisted Recovery) configuration, with a 14 degree ski-jump on the bow and three arrestor wires on the stern. All reconfiguration work is being completed at Severomorsk.
