Brazilian Navy to buy IKL214 submarine, Black Shark torpedos

Being asked by a fellow forum member about news regarding the Brazilian Navy, I decided to do some research on Brazilian forums. The biggest news regarding the Brazilian Navy is about a € 1.018 billion deal, yet to be approved by the Brazilian senate, for the purchase of a Type 214 submarine, as well as modernization of all 5 Type 209-1400 submarines the Brazilian Navy has.

The deal would also cover technology transfers, including the aquisition of know-how for the production of HY-100 steel, and possibly(just speculation for now) a license agreement for building further units.

On a related note, Brazil is to buy Black Shark torpedoes for its submarine force. The contract is also supposed to include technology transfer on the torpedoes.

Actually, I think the Brazilian Navy recognized the know-how aquired with the the IKL209 and Tikuna wasn't enough for the future plans of a nuclear submarine.

Well, they will learn some things, but AFAIK a nuke has not much in common with a SSK.
Well, we will see.
I have to say I was pretty surprised when Tikuna was launched.

About the ex-French carrier vessel Foch, now NAe Sao Paulo, do you know if she went back at sea after the may, 17 2005 accident or does she stay in Rio Harbour? I've seen that she didn't participate in ASPIRANTEX06 nor TROPICALEX06 exercises.

I think she did, although not for extended periods. I don't think the São Paulo was fully repaired, but I'll have to ask my brother in law next time I meet him to know for sure.
